University of Leon - Low Carbon Lighting

Adaptation of the Central University Library Lighting
University of Leon.

PROJECT TEAM & PARTNERS

Regional Energy Agency of Castilla y León (EREN) and
UNIVERSITY OF LEÓN

Total Budget

€100,000

Project Timescale

18 months

DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT

Prior to the decision of undertaking corrective actions in the lighting system of University of León, an energy audit was carried out for all the buildings. The energy audit detected that the library was one of the most energy consuming buildings due to its change of use towards the availability of its own installations. All of that contributed to the decision of implementing possible improvements in the lighting system. These improvements were analysed by EREN technicians and the University of León. This resulted in more adequate measures being adopted to improve the efficiency of the lighting in the library building. The measures were performed in two consecutive steps and they led to an improvement of the visual comfort of users as well as a 30 % saving in lighting energy.

PROJECT OBJECTIVES

• Replacement of all the luminaries with high efficiency luminaires and lamps with T5 lamps.
• Replacement of all electromagnetic ballasts with electronic ones and adaptation of the level of illumination in the communal areas, toilets, corridors etc.

CHALLENGES FACED
Economic barriers had to be overcome after it was realised that the initial cost estimate was too low in comparison to the investments of the project and for this reason the budget had to be stretched in order to complete the whole project.

LESSONS LEARNT & APPLICABILITY IN OTHER SITUATIONS

• Reduction of energy consumption and indirect health benefits: The project achieves 30% in energy savings compared to a conventional system of lighting.

• The economic savings generated is approximately 3000 € annually..

• Studying the working parameters of the installation and the reduction of energy consumption could help to apply this knowledge in other installations within the University of Leon.

• The project is based on more efficient lighting system and can therefore act as a showcase for this king of energy services.

INNOVATIVE PRACTICE

This is an innovative project on a regional level, which focuses on energy efficiency of lighting for existing buildings.
As a result, this project is considered vital because of its capacity for replication in public buildings and tertiary sector.
