Statistics

This area provides access to key statistics on climate change and energy in the Northwest. It also provides links other sources of information, including national statistics of relevance to the region.

UK Low Carbon Policy & Strategy

  • Climate Change Act places a duty to reduce CO2 emissions by 34% on 1990 levels by 2020, and at least 80% by 2050.
  • This equates to an 18% reduction on 2005 levels by 2020 to be delivered through a system of legally binding "carbon budgets"
  • The UK Low Carbon Transition Plan sets out the actions to achieve these budgets to 2020, it has been estimated that between 20-30% of activity will be significantly influenced by regional and local action.
  • By 2020 40% of our electricity will come from low carbon sources, with around 30% from renewables.
  • Not all will come from decarbonising energy supply - 13% from efficiency savings in workplaces, 29% from homes and communities, and 14% from transport.

Northwest Emissions

NW Emissions are currently at 60m Tonnes, which will therefore need to be reduced by 15-20 million tonnes by 2020.

Energy Saving Trust Northwest Dashboard

To aid policy or strategy decision making the Energy Saving Trust North West Dashboard has been published covering all carbon emissions for the Northwest by individual Local Authorities. The dashboard has been produced by our Knowledge Services Team and has sister documents for every region in England. The excel spreadsheet is available here - EST NW Dashboard.

Sustainable Development Indicators

Defra produce regional factsheets on a full range of sustainable development indicators, including carbon emissions. These can be found here.
