Assessment of the contribution of natural systems to carbon sequestration and reduced flood risk.
In 2009-10, the North Pennines AONB Unit was contracted to
investigate and map the number of land management projects across
the North West which may contribute to carbon sequestration and
reduced flood risk.

Since 2008, Natural England have been looking at the role of ecosystem services more widely, and have produced the following reports:
- No charge? Valuing the natural environment (NE220)
The natural environment is essential for the well being of people, so decisions made today must safeguard our natural resources. This report sets out the contribution that nature makes to our economy (such as clean water, carbon storage) to ensure that its value is recognised. - Mapping values: the vital nature of our uplands - an atlas linking environment and people (NE209)
This publication describes, through maps, many of the benefits people derive from the upland environment and how we might secure these for the future. http://naturalengland.etraderstores.com/NaturalEnglandShop/NE209
Following on from these publications, pilot projects were set up in 2009 to look in detail at the ecosystem services provided by particular places across England. Two have direct relevance to the North West, the Bassenthwaite catchment and the South Pennines.
The Bassenthwaite pilot is continuing forward, with an implementation plan in preparation at present (due for release May 2011) Natural England contact Jane Lusardi jane.lusardi@naturalengland.org.uk
