DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT

The project involves examining the possible reduction in pollution and greenhouse gas emission when heavy and light marine fuel oil is substituted with LNG (liquefied natural gas). This also involved locating harbors interested in the study as well as designing two pilot bunkering facilities.

PROJECT TARGETS

The project target was to demonstrate the feasibility of using LNG, which examined its environmental, technical and economical aspects.

CHALLENGES FACED

The main challenge has been to convince the harbor authorities on the safety issues connected to such a LNG bunkering facility.

LEGISLATIVE REQUIREMENTS

Norwegian NOx-tax has strengthened the interest from shipowners to build LNG.fuelled vessels and thus succeeded in making the project of interest to them.

The upcoming IMO-regulations for special waters is expected to work in the same direction.

LESSONS LEARNT & APPLICABILITY IN OTHER SITUATIONS

Using LNG as fuel for ships is both economic and environmentally friendly.

Harbor authorities are now interested in establishing bunkering facilities. Three different harbors are following up the conclusions from the project.
