DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT
The City of Herning has gathered local players into a climate network which is focused on reducing emissions of greenhouse gases and applying the brakes to climate change.
The concepts behind the network are:
- To strengthen a common series of climate initiatives locally.
- To exchange experiences and create partnership options amongst the parties in the network.
- To give the individual business in the network an opportunity to profile itself as a climate-friendly company/organisation.
- The possibility of a complete network to seek public funds for climate initiatives.
Climate Network Herning has been working with the following
projects:
- Dialogue with trade and industry - in order to give companies knowledge and instrument to reduce their own emissions of greenhouse gases.
- Information activities - by producing exhibits, newspapers' with climate focus to all citizens in Herning and participating in mess rooms in MCH Messecenter Herning.
- Hydraulic solar cell panel - students from Business Development Engineers on Aarhus University in Herning has evolved a hydraulic solar cell panel, in order to increase the utilisation of solar power.
- Climate village Studsgaard - together with a small village in Herning, local energy companies are giving citizens advice and knowledge in order to reduce their emission of greenhouse gases. The village is focusing on energy, transportation, food, isolation in buildings and lifestyle.
- We cycle to work - a national campaign, where bicycle dealers help making event with celebrities in order to make citizens driving their cycle instead of their cars to work.
LESSONS LEARNT & APPLICABILITY IN OTHER SITUATIONS
In order to make network like 'I Herning' a
success, it's important to make sure that the organisation
behind the network is functioning properly. With so many partners
involved and so many different requirements, it's possible to
realise only some of the many different ideas. At the same time a
person with an administrative role is central in terms of nursing
and gathering knowledge from the partners of the network. The
strength of Climate Network Herning lies in its delivery of the
different concepts described which are paramount in evolving new
projects, ideas and communicating solutions for reducing greenhouse
gasses.
CHALLENGES FACED
Climate Network Herning consists of many different collaborators
with different requirements. Some want to shape, others to
influence the political decisions and a few are participating in
order to save the world. These challenges have been overcome by:
- Arranging meetings for all partners in the network 5 - 6 times a year.
- Splitting into smaller teams who work on concrete projects.
- Arranging a Climate Camp where experts gave an introduction and the partners afterwards focused on different sectors like transportation, buildings, agriculture and bigger companies.
- Arranging a mini seminar where politicians and partners in the network held discussions about which areas the city of Herning should focus on in order to reduce greenhouse gases.
- Arranging meetings with different teams where experts and other partners were invited and had the opportunity to discuss in more specific terms.
- Keeping an ongoing dialogue with our partners to fulfil their expectations.
Finally Climate Network Herning are not seen as a consistent network but as a dynamic network where partners are involved depending on which subject most partners want to focus on.
